How temporary work works in the UK
Temporary work is work for a limited period, but that label alone does not explain the hours, contractual arrangement or what will happen at the end.

Clarify the assignment before planning around it
Ask for the expected start and finish, the place of work and the number of shifts being discussed. Find out whether the assignment has a defined end date or whether the date is an estimate. Keep other commitments in mind rather than assuming an extension will follow.
If the role is supplied through an agency, ask who will provide the written terms and who handles pay. Employment status depends on the arrangement, not simply the word temporary. See GOV.UK guidance on agency workers.
Prepare for the first day
Check where to report, the contact person, arrival time and induction arrangements. Ask what equipment or clothing is needed and who provides it. Plan your return journey as carefully as the journey there. If a detail is unclear, resolve it before travelling.
Keep a clear record of shifts
Use a simple diary to note agreed shifts and any changes. Ask the relevant partner how hours are confirmed and who can help with timesheet questions. A screenshot or written confirmation of a rota can be easier to refer to than a remembered conversation.
If something changes
Tell the relevant contact promptly if you cannot attend an agreed shift. Ask how cancellation or changes to an assignment are handled under the actual terms. Avoid assuming that arrangements from a previous role apply to a new one.
Before an assignment ends, ask whether any further work is being discussed. Treat a possible extension as unconfirmed until the partner gives you clear information.
Discussing temporary work with Rolefolk
Tell the team your start date, the period you can offer and the tasks and shifts you prefer. Rolefolk checks suitable opportunities through recruitment partners; it does not promise a minimum assignment length, guaranteed hours or an automatic permanent role.
